Clearing old entries out of Address Book

J

John Anderson

I am using Windows XP Pro, and Office XP Small Business
Version 2002. I've kept up with the updates. I use
Outlook to manage my e-mail.

In creating new messages, when I start to type a name in
the "To" box, Outlook manages to find the name and the
corresponding e-mail address. As my address book has
aged, and contacts have changed e-mail addresses, I find
several cases where I get an old e-mail address, long
deleted from my contacts file and no longer valid. To try
to clear out these bad addresses, I exported my contacts
file, deleted all the contacts from the Contacts folder,
and removed the Outlook Address Book. When I look in the
address book, I find no data. But when I start a message
and start to type a name in the "To" box, it still finds
those old names! I searched as well as I could, checked
the Microsoft Office site (but could find no way to mail
my question to them), and found no pertinent information.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

when using the autofill option, use arrow keys to highlight incorrect
error,hit delete
Autofill uses a cache, not yr contacts.

No. That does not apply to Outlook 2002.
Just rename your *.NK2 file to clear the cache completely.

Thanks very much for your answer. Is there a way to clear
that cache? Do you know its name?

Well, I'm Back. I read both references, and followed the
renaming procedure in KB287623. Found one .NK2 file;
renamed it .BAK; started Outlook; started a message to one
of the addresses I had trouble with -- and it found the
incorrect one! (Did I mention, when I get that incorrect
address, I don't get a set of choices). Any other places
that bad address could be coming from????? (Thanks again!)

MANY thanks. I shall study the references and take
action. Appreciate both of you!

You do need to restart Outlook for the changes to take effect.

Resolved my own problem. After firing off the last note,
I tried one more thing. Deleted the new .NK2 file, and re-
booted. THEN when I went for the address, I got the
correct one. Thanks again for all your help
