Clicking from folder to folder very slow

My e-mail database is huge, but I need to refer back to e-mails that
are a couple of years old almost daily. When I click from folder to
folder, it can take up to almost 2 full minutes. Rebuilds do nothing
to help this problem. Can anyone help?

This problem is more or less endemic to any email client. We tend to
treat an email program like a database, and it may even have built-in
database capabilities, but that doesn't make it as fast as a real
database, and, as you say, the program itself may start to bog down as
the database gets large. One approach, therefore, is to export a lot of
old emails, thus making the built-in database lean and mean once again.
You can import the old emails into a real database, or even just leave
them as textfiles on disk and do your searching with BBEdit or similar.
