client side exchange backups.

I have a client who would like to have his outlook contacts and email on the
server so that he can access them from remote locations but he would also
like to be able to have and verify his own backups of that data. is there
anyway to do this? The only data on this i found was a knowledge base
article for outlook 97 "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 168644" And it
basically said ask your admin (I am the admin). Microsoft built a tool for
making backups of pst files but since it's not in a pst file thats no help.

My only remaining solution is to use exmerge and write the data to a
location he can access. This seems like a poor solution and I would prefer
not to add to the strain on this server, it is over worked enough already.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated.

please carbon copy my email on any replies.

But thats not automated. I can write a batch file to automate exmerge, but
no way to automate an export (that I know of.).

just thought of using ost files, beleive they replicate data to client
machine while leaving copy on server. Or do they merely move old stuff and
delete server copy? And either way if server fails ost files are useless,
cannot be opened by outlook alone. (at least don't think they can)

ost files tend to be a mirror copy of the mailbox & can always be opened by
outlook in offline mode.

ps - users can set filters on the folder to control what is replicated.
