Is there any way that I can set Entourage to open message which are grouped
(into conversations etc.) to be collapsed by default when I select the
folder?

I apologise if this is obvious, but I do find the Preferences Panel in
Entourage to be very sparse for such an application :)

If you go to View menu/Collapse All before leaving the folder, then the next
time you open it all groups will be collapsed.

True enough.

Open the folder. Go to View > Arrange By > Edit Custom Arrangements, and
open the Custom Arrangement you're using (or create a new one). Next to
"Default display for groups", select "Collapsed". Click OK. Repeat for
other Custom Arrangements.

Sorry Paul, but that is not happening here. I have found a way to keep some
folders collapsed on opening and that is by setting up a custom arrangement
and calling it something unique. That works everytime and I am using it for
the newsgroup folders I monitor. There doesn't appear to be a way of
altering the default behaviour though...
