Command-delete wipes out your message instead of deleting a word

Mac folks:

For many years, command-delete has deleted a word. In Entourage, that
key combination permanently destroys the message you're working on, instead
of deleting one word. I've looked for ways to reset that key sequence or get
rid of it entirely, because you don't want to know how many messages I've
lost when all I wanted to do was delete a word.

I can't find any way to reprogram keyboard shortcuts in Entourage the
way you can in Word. Is there one I'm just missing? Failing that, is there
an OS X piece of shareware or freeware that will let me reconfigure the
menus/shortcuts of any program?

Thanks,

When I select a word in a message to delete using Command-delete, I get a
window asking me if I want to permanently delete this message. Is it
possible that you have turned off the preference in Notifications to require
confirmation when deleting?

If you use the delete key to delete text, then you can use Command-Z or the
Menu option Edit Menu->Undo to undo the last action. This also works on
messages that you delete and are sent to the Deleted Items folder. No more
looking through your Deleted Items folder for a message you accidentally
deleted. Note that messages deleted from the Deleted Items folder cannot be
restored using Command-Z.
