Outlook 2002 sp3. My pst file is about 130k.
It has not been compacted for several months,
and there is plenty of activity. I just removed
a 4 meg attachment and compacted. It took about
one second, and didn't change the size.

Compacting only occurs when there is a certain amount of whitespace in the
overall file -- it has to be over a certain percentage (not sure what that
is). If you typically leave Outlook open for long periods of time,
background compaction will usually be taking place while you work, so manual
compaction isn't necessarily going to do anything further. If you've
emptied your deleted items folder before the manual compaction and you still
don't gain any space, then your file is already compacted as much as it's
gonna get.

130 Kb is very small for a PST. Why worry about compacting it?
