Compare a cell to a range of cells

Could someone help me?

What I need is to compare one cell with 35 other static
cells. If the data in the main cell is the same as any of
the other cells it is compared against then I want to have
some thing like a 'X' else I want the output cell to be
the same as the main cell.. I hope that wasn't to
confusing!

So basically this would be;
=IF(AL8=AQ8:AQ43,"X",AL8)
=if(maincell=AnyOneOfASeriesOfCells,'X',maincell
How do I specify the range?
