Compressing the mail data files

Hi

I have a 1.9 Gb mail file that even though I have deleted over 3000 mails it
no smaller. I recall there was a way to reduce the size of this file but
cannot remember how. I don't have enough room to rebuild it.
I can't get any more mails off the exchange server due to the size of the
existing data file. Please help, I have looked on the MS knowledge base but
found nothing.
