Computer won't recognize .mdi extension

I run Office 2002, Publisher 2003. I was trying to save a publisher file as
a MDI file, as recommended so that others without Publisher could view it. I
followed the instructions, and it is appearing as an unrecognized file type
(you know - the white file with the three objects on it.) What is odd is
that I was able to make this work a month ago, and now it will not save
properly. The only thing that has changed since then was that I installed an
HP Photosmart photo printer on my computer, but I doubt that changed settings
- but I could be wrong. Anyhow. I can't seem to save as an MDI or a TIFF.
Any suggestions?

Hi K.B.,

The MS Office Document Imaging (MDI) file format is only viewable
in the 2003 version of that app and is created by using File=>Print
and choosing the Document Imaging Writer as a 'printer'.

Is MS Office Document Imaging appearing as installed on
Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office Tools?

Hey Bob!

Sorry for the delay. Yes, it appears under Office Tools. Although it
appears to only support TIFF files in the "open" drop box, not other MDI
files. Is that the problem?

For some reason, when you roll over the unrecognized file, it says it is a
"mspaper.document" - does that provide any help?

Hi K.B.,

'Microsoft Paper' is the original name for MS Office Document Imaging
and is still used internally by parts of the programs.

As you're running mixed Office editions (XP/2002 and Pub 2003) check
that the Office Document Imaging feature is listed as 'not available'
status in Office XP in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel
and that it's 'run from my computer' in Publisher 2003's listing.

Hi Bob,

I am actually running Office 2002, with an XP operating system...

Also, where do I find the "run from my computer" in Publisher?

It seems weird that when I print to Document Image, I can see it there, but
then when I exit out of that program, and try to reopen the unrecognized
document in Document Image, it tells me it isn't a valid Document Image file.

Many thanks for your wonderful help.
