Confirmation of mail received and mail read

I'm looking for a way to be sure that my messages have been received and/or are read by my recepient.
As I recall it's an Outlook and T-bird feature so I guess there must be a way to do it. But how?

that there is no accepted standard for this feature and it is highly
unreliable.

Thanks Adam,
was a useful link.
I often find that some of my mail get stuck in a spamfilter; this feature would clarify if my mail got into their mailaccount. Still fault ridden, guess I'll be back to using an old fashioned fax for the real important stuff.
