Confirming contents of folders

Gerald Epstein

I am using Entourage 12.0.1 under Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010); I am backing up
my Documents folder to a network hard drive using ³File Syncronization².

I want to be sure that the back up is complete and have looked at the two
volumes and see that they appear identical i.e. 10.35gb, 17,162 items etc.

My confusion is that in both volumes individual Entourage email folders
appear empty in that ³Get Info² reads zero although in Entourage there are,
for example, 60 emails in that folder.

I suppose my question is how can I be confident that the email database
(equivalent to the pst file in Outlook) is being backed up if individual
folders appear empty.

Sorry to be so longwinded and thank you in anticipation.

I'm really curious. Where and what are you looking at that you see
individual Entourage email folders?

As far as I know, all your email is stored in
[username]:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Office 2008 Identities:Main
Identity [or name of your chosen identity]
and there are no individual email folders in that Main Identity folder.

Sorry, now realise I am looking at the old Outlook files that came over to
my Mac.

Sorry to have wasted your time.

My problem therefore is how to keep an up to date copy of my emails data
when the file (70k emails) is more than 6gb.

I don't suppose there can be incremental updating of a single database file,
can there?

Many thanks for the response

Gerald

Hi Gerald,

I don't think any of the file backup programs can delve into a
single-file database and record incremental changes--and even if they
said they could, I don't think you'd want to trust them to record
uncorrupted data anyhow. This is one of the big issues with Entourage,
discussed here:
http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/03/microsoft_ditch_the_entourage_database.html

You might look for relevant advice here:
http://entourage.mvps.org/database/

and a similar issue is discussed here (could be adapted for other backup
programs, I'm sure).
http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/01/alternative_method_to_use_entourage_and_time_machine.html

Right-click and Create Archive does zip my identity to about half the
size, but it takes much longer than a simple copy (10 minutes for 1gb?).
Others use multiple identities, slimming down their main database for
daily use and easy backup while keeping a Main Identity 2006, Main
Identity 2005, to consult the archives. Depends on what works for you.

Thanks again, I'm so glad I found this "group" and you in particular.

My transfer over to a Mac Air has been almost entirely a delight, the one to
one sessions at an Apple Store help a lot but I am paranoid about having
secure back-ups which weren't a problem with Outlook 2007 and Memeo.

Clearly the way around it is to accept that there is no way around and just
let the backup crunch away overnight each night and worry about global
warming another time.

welcome to the mac, then. :) Happy to help (though, actually, I'm no
Entourage expert)

At least data protection is a good reason for global warming, not like
you were too lazy to walk six blocks. :)

Out of interest I went to my local Apple Store last night and purchased a 1T
Time Capsule - the problem should now be resolved by the automation of the
whole process - a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut outcome but at least
an outcome.

Thanks

Gerald
