Connecting to exchange using outlook (pop)

We have recently changed, at the office, to exchange and
i'm having trouble using outlook (pop) to send/receive
messages.

I can send/receive but i'm always getting old messages
come back and it takes forever to receive messages. Is
there a special setting that needs to be on my outlook in
order to correct this.

Note. i use a laptop and need acces to email. therefore
i use outlook (pop)because i don't have a vpn acces to
the exchange server.

Please help..
