"Connection Failure" when sending mail

When I try to send mail in Entourage through my mac mail I get a
message saying " A connection failure has occurred" I have no
problems receiving mail. I went under the accounts and set it to "SMTP
server requires authentication" but that does not seem to help. Any
one have any other suggestions??

Every now and again .mac.com does maintenance on their servers and you can't
send or receive (depending which server). Try again later.

Alternatively, your ISP may not permit your sending mail from any SMTP
server other than their own. I believe Earthlink does that. In that case you
have to set the SMTP server to your regular Earthlink one. I'm not positive
as to whether that would allow you to run your mac.com account as a normal
IMAP account, or whether you'd have to switch it to POP. Someone else here
who has Earthlink will know the answer to that one.
