Consensus on 10.4 Tiger corupt attachment issue?

J

Jim Banks

I've been following the "Corrupt attatchments since upgrade to Tiger"
thread, in hopes of avoiding the issue when I upgrade to Tiger. To sum up
what I seem to have been reading: Little Snitch and NetBarrier are in
conflict with 10.4 and Entourage 2004. The Little Snitch problem has been
resolved with version 1.2b5. People who don't use either of these programs
have not had the corruption problem. N'est-ce pas?

I'd appreciate confirmation of the current state of affairs from those who
do and don't use the offending programs. I don't use them, and the question
hovering around the attachment issue is all that's holding me back from
upgrading to Tiger. MacFixit, Microsoft and other info sources have not
updated their reports on this issue in a while.

Thanks,
Jim Banks

You can't prove a negative. The vast majority of users have not
experienced this problem, and they are certainly not all going to write
in and confirm that they don't use LittleSnitch or NetBarrier.

However, no one wrote in to this list after the solution was found and
said, "But I'm still having the problem and I don't use LittleSnitch and
NetBarrier." Furthermore, the announcement from the LittleSnitch folks
made it clear that they had found an actual cause for the problem (which
they described as a bug in the kernel).

Thus, I think you can assume that the problem has been tracked down.

However, if this is the only thing keeping you from upgrading to Tiger,
then I strongly suggest that you simply upgrade - but in a cautious
manner. There is good reason for caution. There are still lots of apps I
use that have trouble with Tiger, plus there are many things about Tiger
that just plain suck (like Spotlight, which couldn't find its rear end
with both hands). So I've settled upon a solution that lets me use Tiger
much of the time without being trapped there all of the time. What I did
was to partition my hard drive, with Panther on one partition and Tiger
on the other. m.

I hesitated to upgrade to Tiger because of the Entourage attachment
issue -- so I followed this thread closely. Having come to the same
conclusion you did -- third party software problems -- I did a clean
install. I had backed up my entire drive before the erase and install.
I then used the Migration Assistant to transfer all my files including
those associated with Entourage. Afterwards all my apps started up
without a problem.

I have no problems with single or multiple attachments using Entourage
with our Exchange server. I have tested attachments sent to various
accounts -- MS Exchange, POP, etc. - no problems. The 10.4.2 update
should be out shortly -- based on rumors -- and it will correct misc.
problems. Spotlight works very well for me -- no it will not search
the Entourage database. I would recommend you upgrade.

Jim,

The issue with corrupt attachments does appear to be MOST often related
to users with LS or NB installed. Two subsequent releases of LS seem to
have abated the reports from LS users. We have not heard/seen from NB
users about NB updates and resolution.

That said, there is still the possibility of experiencing corrupt
attachments in Entourage WITHOUT Little Snitch or NetBarrier. See this
thread at the Apple Discussion Forum (see post by LJB on Jun 15):

As for upgrading to Tiger . . . Tiger is at 10.4.1 with 10.4.2 seeded
to the developers. As long as your productivity aps are current, it
would seem "safe" to upgrade. As Mr. Neuberg mentions above, I, too,
have a partition with Panther on it. I always maintain a partition that
is an upgrade behind and use it as a maintenance boot drive (for
DiskWarrior, e.g.).

I run Riger (10.4.1), Office 2004 with Entourage and SP's 1&2 and still
have a major issue. I have to use Apple Mail when I want to send
attachments.

I used to have Little Snitch but removed it. I'm not running
NetBarrier.

Here's hoping that someone will come up with a fix; regardless who's
fault it is...

Someone else reported the same thing--then said it turned out they had not
entirely removed Little Snitch. Is that possible?

I have been having the same Entourage problem, and I am also
experiencing the "corrupt fonts" issue with Word and Excel. I took out
every font except for the System fonts, and I no longer had the font
problem with Word & Excel - I also no longer had a problem with
Entourage corrupting my attached files! They were sent and recieved
perfectly, in spite of the fact that I also had LS running. It makes me
ask whether the problems with Entourage corruption are actually font
related wrt the entire Office program and just showing up as emails
with bad attachments. Office is certainly handling fonts differently
than many other Mac programs.

I was using LS V1.2b5 and had the problem.
I have removed LS by its uninstaller plus two files in Library folder
"Application Support" and "Objective Development" found by Spotlight.
The "littlesnitch.kext" file is not visible anywhere on my system.
I have rebooted the system and the problem persists.
The problem goes away with a safe reboot.
No problem with attachments sent by Apple Mail.

I don't think LS has been identified as the culprit - there is
something else at play here.
I wish I knew what.
