contact tabs

Sorry about the question. Is there a way to get contact tabs to
show..i.e. a,b,c,.......x,y,z. This seems like such a simple thing the
designers would not leave out, but I cannot find it.

Good idea.

Have you tried using "typeahead" (also known as "typedown")?

Switch the focus (as demonstrated by the light blue rectangle surrounding
the focus area) to the contact list. (The focus is often either the folder
list on the left, or the quick filter edit control up above and on the
right.) Then start typing the last name of a contact (or the display name,
if the contact is not a human -- like a company or just an e-mail address).
You should automatically scroll to the first instance of it. If you keep
typing within the typeahead timeout, it will continue to try and match until
the matching fails, and it will settle on the first contact after the end of
the set of contacts that matched the last good match.

This also works in the GAL, when browsing is enabled, and for the GAL at
least is sometimes significantly faster than using the quick filter.

Two clarifications:

1) You can switch focus using the Tab key, or by selecting one or more
contacts in the contact table view.

2) Contacts are sorted using a "LastName FirstName" mechanism in non-GAL
address books, so that's the text the typeahead will match against. If there
is no first and last name entered in for the contact, it is sorted according
to what it displays under the "Name" field. The GAL doesn't have an index
for "LastName FirstName", so we sort just using the "Name" field for all GAL
contacts.

Nathan,

Thank you. That works fine. OK, 1 more question. What can I do if I
want to store a contact by the company name instead of the LastName
FirstName. For example, I have alot of vendors I use. I do not remember
all of the reps names but I do remember the company name. It would make
for quicker viewing and access.

Well, you can just have a contact with no First Name / Last Name
information, but just the company field filled out, and whatever other
information (general e-mail, phone, fax, etc.) attached.

An example is attached.
