Contacts are there, but not visible unless searching for them

my contacts folder appears to be empty. However, if I search within it, all
the items appear to still be there. Mailbox cleanup says the folder has 0k
size . . .

ScanOST did not find anything related to the contacts folder.

Any suggestions?
