Contacts - Converting Text to Numbers

All the number in my contact area are stored as text, is there a way to
convert these to numbers? Thanks!

I have different categories for each contact and one of them is net worth.
Somehow all of the numbers in this category are stored as text. Is there any
easy way to change all of them to a number?

Not directly. I assume that by "category," you mean a custom field or
property. First, you would have to write code or redesign a custom form to
add a new custom field. Then, you would need code to copy the data value
from the old property to the new one.
