contacts do not open using the navigaion pane

In Outlook 2003, contacts do not open using the navigaion pane - all other
buttons in the Navigation Pane work properly - I can get to my contact by
right clicking the navigation contacts button and asking for then to be
opened in a new window.

I have tried opening Outlook with "Outlook.exe /cleanviews" but that did not
help
