Contacts won't copy to the exchange server

MVPs et al,

I've just encountered a strange problem. I had to rebuild my database
because it had become corrupt. To protect my contact categories, I moved all
my exchange contacts to my local address book. I rebuilt the database and
then copies my local contacts back to the exchange server.

The problem is not all of the contacts copied back.

I repeated the process and re-synced the with the server - no luck. :-(
Still missing many contacts (and I have no idea how many exactly) all of
them appear in Entourage but not all of them make it onto my WM2005
SmartPhone or OWA.

Please help!

Hi Matt!

Are you sure you copied your contacts back into the Contacts list on the
Exchange server and not just to your local address book, which only
resides on your computer?

If your contacts had been on the server to begin with, you wouldn't have
a need to copy them back to the server after rebuilding your Entourage
database. I'm not sure why you're having to do this to begin with.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I am sure I copied them back to the exchange
server. I can tell for certain because I first deleted all the contacts off
the exchange server and verified they were gone in OWA.

I then copied the contacts back from my local address book to the exchange
server. The problem is that not all of them are copying back. A couple
hundred do appear in OWA but I'm missing a lot.

The reason I did this is to preserve the categories through a database
rebuild. I.e. MOVE the contacts from the exchange server to my local address
book. Then rebuild DB. Then move contacts back the exchange server.

Hi Matt,

"A couple hundred..." triggered a memory for me of this issue. How many
contacts total do you have, and how many are you trying to move in one
step?

We have had some problems moving large batches (>200) of contacts,
either importing as vCard or moving from local to Exchange. In general
I have worked around this by moving the contacts in batches of 200 or
less.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply, a tried moving the contacts in batches of 190 and
encountered the same problem. :-(

I decided to use Outlook 2003 on an XP laptop to see what it showed of my
contacts.

To my surprise, all the contacts did in fact copy this time around, however
32 of the contacts did not copy the contact's name. This prevented my WM5
phone and OWA from looking up the contact by the name (the problem I
discovered in the first place)

So now this new question goes out to Microsoft and the MVPs:

What would cause Entourage or Exchange to copy all of the contacts but
randomly drop the names of some?

Has anyone else experienced this? I have 406 contacts total and only 32
(~8%) fail.

If you want to try and recreate this, move all your contacts from exchange
to your local address book. Verify the contacts are no longer on the
exchange server in OWA.

Then copy them back to the exchange server, see if they all make it.
