Convert .msg Files

Steve Drenker

Hi...I have a lot of individual .msg files from Outlook I need to read on my
Mac. I'm using Entourage 2004.

Ideally, I would like to be able to convert the files so I can read them in
Entourage and reply to them.

Second-best would be to convert them to a text file.

Lastly, no, I don't have the .pst file. I just have numerous individual .msg
files from Outlook, so a .pst conversion isn't an option.

It may work to simply select one of these in the finder, do a 'get info' on
it and set the 'open with' info to entourage, then click the 'change all'
button.

If that doesn't work, then you need to rename the files so they end in
',eml' instead of .msg', then they can be opened in entourage.

I just uploaded an Automator Action that will rename .MSG files dropped onto
it to my web page. Grab it here:

To use it, simply un-zip it, then drop any number of .msg files onto it.

I don't think that anything except Outlook can open .msg files, Barry. have
you tried it? Changing the extension to .eml does not change the structure
of the file.

Over on Windows, I think there are converters to convert .msg files to .eml
files (which Outlook Express Windows can open too).

Oh.

I just tried it and you're quite right (the text parts of a msg can be
recovered, but the rest is just garbage).

I had wrongly assumed that the msg file was just the source of the message
as received (as it is in entourage). Bad assumption. I should have
remembered that this was Outlook we were dealing with...

Sorry Steve - Ignore my last message :(

Hi, all. Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, it sounds like there's no way
to convert the .msg file structure to a file structure that can be read in
Entourage.
