I believe you mean you have PowerPoint XP and the teacher has PowerPoint 97.
PowerPoint is an application and Windows is the operating system that runs
the computer.
But the answer to your question is that you can create a presentation with
your PPT XP and as long as you use only the animations found in PPT 97 all
will work with problems. This page and the page it links to give an overview
of what cannot be done in PPT 97 (even though it is comparing 97 to 2000 it
all still is accurate for you).
