Copying log files

Entourage 2008

I was having problems with my mail server, and wanted to send the log to my
ISP. A long log of SMTP errors popped up, but I can't figure out how to copy
the contents to a text file. Anyone have the magic answer?

If I understand you correctly, you should be able to do this as follows:

- launch the Console application from the Utilities folder (inside
Applications)
- find the relevant log file
- copy the relevant messages
- paste them into any application that can create text files, e.g.,
TextEdit or Word.

Your original message said you wanted to "send the log", so I assumed you
had a log to send, in which case copying and pasting should have worked.

My console shows some logs for Microsoft under /Library/Logs, but I don't
see one for Entourage, so I'm not sure how to suggest your proceed.

I can see the Entourage log file while the error is occurring. Entourage has
it's own log file interface. But there's no way to copy the logs. If I look
in console, I don't see the Entrourage logs. So while I can see the log
within Entourage, I can't do anything useful with it.

Surely there has to be a raw log file for Entourage that's in text format
that I can copy. Anybody in the group have any ideas?

Once again: when SMTP errors occur, Entourage throws up a log file window
with the errors, or list of errors, but there doesn't seem to be any way to
find that log and copy it outside of Entourage displaying that log window.

Thanks. Now I understand which log you meant. I don't know of any way to
capture the contents of an Error Log window other than through a screen
snapshot.

Use Send Feedback on Entourage on the Help menu to request MS add this
capability to Entourage.

Thanks Ed. Hmmm. An error log file that you can't share with system admins.
Leave it to Microsoft to figure out that feature. I'll send feedback to
Billg directly. :)
