Corrupt database causing Powerbook to not start up or boot ?

Hi!

My Powerbook G4 Titanium running OS 10.3.7 will not start up, it keeps
giving me a blank gray screen and I believe it's due to a corrupt
Entourage X database.

This has happened a couple times before and after I could finally get
my computer started up I could compact the Entourage database and
everything would start working just hunky-dorey again, until now... :(
It just plain won't start up, not even with the OS CD.

Each time it's happened, including this time, I was working on my
computer and all of a sudden it would stop responding to keystrokes,
mouse clicks, etc. so much so that all I could do was shut the computer
down using the power button, in the middle of everything.

Unfortunately this appears to corrupt the Entourage database which in
turn appears to be what is responsible for my computer not starting up.

I've been through the forums here and that's where I learned that
shutting off my computer with the power button is what's corrupting the
database but I haven't been able to locate a "fix" yet.

We're off to purchase DiskWarrior tomorrow to see if that'll help but
in the meantime I thought I'd post here to see if anyone knows a fix
for this issue, or even maybe someone knows that I'm way off base and
it's something else causing my problems besides a corrupt Entourage
database and they'll be able to tell me what it is... oh please oh
please oh please.... :)

Thank you and have a terrific evening!

Stop believing it. You're having a hardware problem or a deep-rooted
system problem. Your restarts may be corrupting the Entourage database
but Entourage is not causing the problem. m.

As Matt says, there's no way that could possibly be the case. Your Entourage
database lives in your user folder documents and has nothing whatsoever to
do with your system or startup or anything much else. DiskWarrior is
certainly a good idea.

Thank you to both of you for your posts. :)

Even if I haven't figured out what it is at least thanks to you guys
now I know something that it is not. (and I can quit blaming
Entourage, which is a good thing since I really do like it... :)

Have a great weekend guys!

Just a follow-up question... My Entourage is set up to launch
automatically when I start up my computer. Knowing that, is there
still no way that an Entourage bad database can be causing the startup
problems?

Thank you again, have a terrific day!

No, because when your Mac is booted it first starts the OS, and then logs
you in/lets you log in, and then when you log in it runs your launch items
(eg Entourage).

The grey screen you reported sounds like the one you get when the OS is
starting.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi All!

Thank you again for your time! :)

Just a follow-up to add my praises to the other posts here about
DiskWarrior.

This program is outstanding and I cannot recommend it high enough to
anyone using Mac. It saved every last one of my files. I wouldn't
have known about Disk Warrior if it weren't for the forums and I just
wanted to my two cents to help anyone else. :)

And now I can love my Entourage again!!

Have a terrific week!
Diane
