Help!

Our Entourage database is corrupted and we cannot access any of the data.

On starting Entourage we are prompted with teh file file repaitr facility
but when clicking advance or basic repair it says

"An error occurred while launching. A read/write error has occurred (-40). "

What can we do to try and fix this or at least retreive our contacts
details. Unforutetely we did not have a backup of any of the data?

Thanks in advance in anyone can help.

Error -40 is a positioning error (tried to position before start of file).
This might indicate file system corruption. Try running Apple's Disk
Utility: First Aid and repairing the disk till it shows clean.

If you are still having problems report back with what version of Entourage
you are using and what OS you have installed.

The entourage version is from office 2004. Have not run the disk utility yet
and at writing do not have acccess to the MAC. (My knowledge of Mac's is
limited actually).

I have transferred the file to my PC at present and was wondering if there
was any applications which coudl be run to salvage as much information from
the database file as possible?

Thanks

First, it's Mac not MAC. :) You don't mention if you have upgraded
Office. It's important as improvements in updates might have fixed the
problem you are having. To know what version you have installed, look under
Entourage in the Menu bar and see what About Entourage is showing. The
latest version of Entourage is 11.3.6.

Note: Microsoft doesn't update each application with each update. To know if
the latest updater has been applied look at the Microsoft Component Plugin
in the Office folder and see what version it is. The latest Office version
11.3.9. If you are in column view in the Finder, it will show the version
info. Get Info (the little blue icon with the I) also shows version number.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

You can open the database in a text editor, but it's not something that will
give you your data is useable format. Entourage needs to be able to rebuild
the database.

If the error was correct it's not the database but your drive where the data
is stored. Open Disk Utility in Applications folder --> Utility folder -->
Disk Utility. Select the drive and Verify first. If you need to Repair you
will need to reboot from a different drive.

looking in the wrong identity so wa looking at the wrong the DB.

He used a tool avialable online somewhere which fixed the corrupted mailbox
succesfully and got it all going again.

Thanks for the input

I also have a read/write error (-40) in Entourage that keeps me from
opening the app. I tried to send some large image files and received a
MAIL DAMEON return that gave me the spinning beach ball of death when
I tried to open it. I force quit Entourage and I think I had a restart
in there somewhere as well. When I launched Entourage after this, I
got the error.
I Have an Intel MacBook with Tiger 10.4.11 and my Entourage vintage is
10.0.0 (1309). I tried to fix the disk with First Aid, but during the
verify process I am kicked out with the message "The underlying task
reported failure on exit." So I can't repair the HD.
I got my MacBook about 6 months ago, so I still have an uncorrupted
version of the database on my old G4, but only up to the date I left
the machine. I can get into my ISPs webforms mailbox, so I am getting
mail, but really need to access the database on the box.
I have an appointment with a "Genius" at the local Apple store
tomorrow.
As a Entourage expert, Diane, any light you can shed on this issue
would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Did you try holding the shift key down when opening Entourage? This will
disable all schedules. If Entourage automatically tried to fire a schedule
that downloads or sends mail at startup and you have a corrupted message,
Entourage will crash. Bypassing the schedule should allow you to open
Entourage and move those messages from the Outbox.

Try booting from your OS install CD and run Disk Utility to Repair your
drive. Don't run Repair Permissions from the CD as newer permissions are
available since the CD was issued. Run Repair Permissions from Disk Utility
while booted from your startup drive.

Do you have a separate volume or drive that you can use? I would create a
clone on the drive then erase your current drive then restore from the
clone. Even better would be to "Erase & Install" then Migrate your data from
the clone. The "Erase & Install" should fix any drive segments that are bad.

First, you are running Entourage X at it's first version. Bad!!!!! That's 20
lashes with a wet noodle! Even updated Entourage X is "End of life"
software. Please consider the new offers to upgrade. (see below)

Go to Mactopia and download the updaters for Office X. You should be at
10.1.9. Downloads <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX>

The updated version will have better luck with rebuilding, but if the
problem is your HD then nothing will help other than trying to run Repair
Disk with Disk Utility.
