Corrupt records?

R

Renwick Congdon

Entourage has started to lock and quit when I search messages. I have tried
to compact the database, but the results vary between Fail - not enough
room, Fail - files size is over 4GB, or Success, however all of the messages
from the last two weeks, and I suspect others, are missing.

The Old Database is 2.4 GB, the new Database is 3.99GB. Additionally, when I
deleted 10,000+ messages, the file size didn't reflect a change, neither did
the number that shows when compacting.

Ideas?

Thanks

It looks like you have some corruption in your database more serious than
that which is fixed by a 'typical' rebuild (compact).

Try an advanced rebuild. This rebuilds the index from scratch, without
trying to re-use the existing one.

Barry,

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I am getting nervous about my
data.

I tried to do an Advanced Rebuild, but got the message that there wasn't
enough room in the disk...of course there was another 35GB available.

Also, I commonly get a mail error when trying to search messages.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Oh dear, this isn't looking very promising.

First, make sure you have updated to Office v 10.1.5. Check that this file:
Macintosh HD/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Office/Microsoft
ComponentPlugin
Is at version 10.1.5

Next, delete the folder 'Microsoft' in the folder ~/Library/Preferences

Go into the Microsoft User data folder, and look in the 'Office x
Identities' folder and into the folder for your problem identity.
You will probably find several databases in there, named 'Database', 'Old
Database' etc, and the cache file named similarly.
Find the oldest of these that existed before you tried all this rebuilding,
and move the others out of the folder - put them somewhere safe in case you
need to restore them again. Rename these two as 'Database' and 'Database
Cache' once again. (These backup files are automatically created when you
launch a rebuild action).

Also turn off 'Office Notifications' and quit all office apps.

Restart the computer while holding down the shift key to disable third party
KEXTs.

Now, try the advanced rebuild again, and good luck!

Barry,

Again, thanks for your help. Unfortunately it didn't work. I have always
reverted to the original DB and DB cache in the Profiles, so that was easy.
What tends to happen when I am rebuilding the Database (using Advanced) the
dialog box shows two numbers, something and 57232. Something increases until
it hits 8400, takes about ten minutes at 8400, then goes on to 32000 or so,
then says it is finished. When I launch Entourage, I get a message saying
the file is too large and needs to be compacted. I use regular rebuild, get
the same feedback as the advanced, until it finally says there isn't enough
room on the disk.

Is there a way to export the files, then import them into a new
install/file?

My guess is that there are a number of corrupt or damaged records. Is there
a way to find them and kill them?

Any more thoughts would be appreciated...even if it is moving the records to
another application.

Only further help I can offer is to try an application called 'entouraid',
which attempts to extract information from damaged databases. Sorry, I don't
have a URL for it, and I don't normally recommend 3rd party utilities like
this.

I have heard both good & bad news stories about entouraid, but it doesn't
look like you have any other options.

I would be interested to hear how you get on with it.
