Corrupted SW for Windows XP OS

H

I was given a Gateway laptop that was preloaded with Windows XP. However,
there is a corruption with the OS that now prevents ANY Windows Updates from
applying. Having already contacted Gateway about this, I'm still without
resolution.

The person who gave me the laptop does not have any of the CDs that came
with it and Gateway is unable to assist since the machine is well beyond its
warranty.

Apparently, the recovery point feature was never turned on, so that is not
an option.

I was wondering if Microsoft is able (via human help - not online
selections) to view the Windows XP on my machine to validate its authenticity
- and to then help me get the XP software reloaded via a download or
something.

Thanks.

No, and because it's an OEM version, Microsoft can't help you. Your only
option is to buy a copy of Windows XP, flatten the system, and start from
scratch.

(BTW - your question really should have been posted in one of the Win XP
newsgroups, not Office. If/when you do have another question about the OS,
start there.)

Run a manual winupdate & install them; presumably you will get update
failure msgs.
Select the err code & see if any solutions offered there help
If still a problem post to the windowsupdate group with details of the err
codes.

Even if you resolve the problem, at some stage you will need a winxp cd
