Corruption? Can't get to rebuild dialog...

John B.

With "Send & Receive" in progress I clicked on my Inbox. Is this known to
cause corrpution?

Now when I view the Inbox I see all my messages, but also I also see bands
about the height of four or five headers span across the message pane in a
few places. (These bands are filled with a horizontal pattern of thin grey
and white stripes.) And they move around depending on where I scroll.
??? (Restarting the Mac makes no difference.)

Good news though. All messages appear to be present and uncorrupted. All
other mail boxes are fine. And I'm able to send this message ...

I've tried to rebuild: Option-click Entourage.

I get a message that says:

To rebuild the database, quit all Microsoft programs and try again.

If I understand correctly, I need to get past this dialog to choose Typical
Rebuild or Advanced Rebuild. Correct?

In the event that I need to perform an Advanced Rebuild should backup the
User Data first? -- I'm thinking that Entourage automatically does so.

Problem solved.

Prior to attempting to "rebuild" I had indeed quit all MS applications as
instructed, and I force quit Office Notifications ... but no avail.

In a final of stroke of brilliance I used the
Entourage/TurnOfficeNotifications menu, which did the trick!

After doing so, option-clicking Entourage led me to the elusive rebuild
dialog.

Force-quitting won't quit the Microsoft Database Daemon. Regular quitting
usually will, but better is to do what you did - turn off Office
Notifications - or remove Microsoft Database Daemon from System
Preferences/Login Items (Accounts/Startup Items in Panther), Log Out and In.
Or run this script in Script Editor after quitting all other Office apps:

tell application "Microsoft Database Daemon" to quit
