could not open the attachment, an unknown error (-5000) occurred

Hi,

I am using Entourage 2004. I cannot open any attachments.
I am getting "could not open the attachment, an unknown error (-5000)
occurred" error message.
But I save the attachment to the disk, I can open the file.

I tried following actions;
1- Create a new user and log in it,
2- Remove Office and reinstall,
3- Delete database from Identities folder, problem continues with blank
database,
4- Control the permission on Office folder -->it was read and write
5- Verified disk permissions, using disk utility,

But my problem continues.
How can I resolve?

Sevgi.
Thanks and Best regards.

It still sounds like a permissions problem on the specific folder where
attachments are saved temporarily when you double-click them in an email.
That's the "Entourage Temp" folder in the Microsoft User Data folder in your
user's Documents folder. Check that one: it should be Read & Write too for
you.

Note that Repairing Disk Permissions using Disk Utility never touches
anything in your OS user folder - it only fixes things on your startup disk
_outside_ your user folder. And although everything in your user folder
should be Read & Write for you (the Owner), things can go awry. Note that
clicking "Apply to enclosed items" for a containing folder doesn't actually
work in Panther - it's supposed to work in Tiger, so do fix the permissions
on the Entourage Temp folder itself, as well as on the Microsoft User Data
folder.

As an addendum, error -5000 is a standard Macintosh error number,
afpAccessDenied, and generally refers to any kind of file permissions error
rather than just files accessed over AFP. It is very likely that what Paul
is saying is correct; your Saved Attachments folder (in
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data) does not have enough permissions for
Entourage to save it there.

As a workaround (until you can address the permissions issue), can you drag
the attachment to the desktop instead?

I controlled permissions of "entourage temp" and "Microsoft user data"
directories. I was "read and write".
Can you any other recommendation?

Thanks

Well, that wouldn't really help practically even if they're wrong, since it
means they're being created wrong when he double-clicks the attachment...
Still, it would be interesting to know.

Entourege temp is empty and subfolder of Microsoft user data.
Microsoft user data's and Entourage temp's permissions are "read and
write".
And other folder and files has the same permisson.

How can I resolve the problem?
I'm waiting for a resolution.

(Please quote relevant paragraphs from previous messages - I had to dig back
through the thread to find the data)

How did you 'remove office'? Just a 'drag to trash', or by using the 'remove
Office' tool? The latter is the proper way as it also removes the support
files that office uses without touching any of the data.

Creating a new identity demonstrates the problem is unlikely to be in the
data files, creating a new system user indicates the problem is unlikely to
be in the user's prefs or other data

Reinstalling office (provided you removed it fully) indicates the problem is
unlikely to be in the application support files.

So, from what you have described it sounds like something is hosed in the
finder's file type prefs and Entourage can't find the right application to
open a file. This sort of stuff is mixed up with the internet prefs and all
sorts of stuff right through the system. I would be surprised if the
symptoms are only showing in Entourage.

In this case, it is likely that you may have to resort to a full system
reinstall to fix it :(
