count cells in a range with multiple conditions

I am trying to use the countif function and calculating the number of cells
that contain a vlaue greater than x but less than y. What is the formula?

here's answers from JE McGimpsey & myself to a similar question (counting
number of items between 6 & 12 inclusive) yesterday

Jim's answers:
=COUNTIF(A1:A10,">=6") - COUNTIF(A1:A10,">12")
alternatively:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A10>=6),--(A1:A10<=12))
