COUNTA returning 3 instead of 2?

I have a table with "x" in some squares. Below the columns, I put
=COUNTA(B3:B17, "x") to count the non-blank cells containing "x". But the
formula in every instance is returning one more than the actual count - if
there are 2 x's, I get 3; if there are 5, I get 6, etc. Can someone
enlighten me?

D'oh! "IF" makes _perfect_ sense - which is probably why it didn't occur to
me! Thanks, Chuck.
