Countif function with variables

In Excel 2000 I was able to do this:
Col.A has a sequence of 1000 random numbers
Col. B has bin values (like in the histogram definition)
Using Indirect and countif funcitons, I could compute the
number of values in Col A between B1 and B2 and so on.

I am not able to do this in Excel 2003.
Need help to recreate the old behavior

What did you try in Excel 2003?

You can try something like this;

=COUNTIF(A1:A1000,">="&B1)-COUNTIF(A1:A1000,">"&B2)
