countif month=

I should have posted this in the New Users forum, but here it is. In a daily
log, I want to count all the log entries for a given month. The first entry
in the log is in a column headed "Date". We type in 10/14 and it comes out
14-Oct. I want to know how many entries in June or July or August or...
without manually counting. I am sure this is easy and I am missing the
obvious.

=SUMPRODUCT(--(TEXT(A1:A100,"mmm")="Jul"))

or

=SUMPRODUCT(--(MONTH(A1:A100)=7))
