countif, sumif

i need to count how many somethings are in a column,
which contains only text. so, i need to know how many
items are in column c, rows 2-10. what do i do?

Oops -- sorry! I misunderstood -- I thought the column
only contained text -- this one won't work!

Do you just mean the count of non-blank cells? If so, =COUNTA(C2:C10). Or do
you mean the count of cells that contain some particular text entry. If the
latter, =COUNTIF(C2:C10,"abc")

Try using =COUNTIF(C2:C10,"*")

Best answer. Slight alternative to exclude counting "",

=COUNTIF(C2:C10,"?*")
