counting records

If I have a large db and I do an auto filter to filter out
(example: all the pending records) it filters this, but
is there a way to have a record counter like in access
that will show 1 of 53 records? I can't see how to turn
this on and I thought at one time it showed how many were
filtered. It shows the row where they are originally
located but I would like to know how many filtered.
