I've rebuilt the database both ways, ran Disk Doctor, trashed
preferences, and still Entourage crashes every time I open it. Can I
rescue old e-mail messages into OSX mail? I'm ok with never using
Entourage again, but I'd like to get those messages back.

First step to try is to set up a new user in the system accounts and then
log in as that user. Does Entourage start up OK Here?
If not, run the 'remove office' utility to delete all traces of Microsoft
Office except your data in the 'Microsoft User Data' folder. (if you have
any custom templates saved, you may want to back these up first. Likewise,
back up your normal template, or any changes to that will be lost). The
re-install and see if that works.
If the new system user works, then quit all office apps and log out. Log
back in holding down the shift key to disable startup items. Move the
'Microsoft User Data' folder from the documents folder to the desktop.
Compress it (with either stuffit or panther's new 'create archive' function)
and delete the original AND EMPTY THE TRASH.
Now, start up entourage. Does it work? Do you get the 'welcome' message
showing up? If so, then this proves the problem lies in your data. If not,
you need to 'remove office' as before and reinstall again.
Please report back on how you get on.
