Crashing after complete rebuild . Thanks for helping me !

Hi,

Seems my Database was over the 4Gigs limit. My Main Identity (France here,
its name is Identité Principale) quitted unexpectedly yesterday.

Had the simple database rebuild. Not working.

Had a complete rebuild, and then the simple one after, as required by app.
Not working. Damn.

I went through many forums and FAQs and Entourage Help Page. What should I
do now ? Require help. Oh yes, good idea. HELP PLEASE !

System is 10.3.9 / Entourage X version 10.1.6

---

Now I'm here, I have a side-quest :

My Palm got stolen 2 weeks ago. Yes, that's the maximum-problems-law, you
got one, you'll get another.

Still, I have a "Entourage Storage" file in Palm directory. Hope I could
recover my adress book, but what would be the process.

You could try updating Entourage first (since the currect version is
10.1.9). Hopefully, the new version will be a little more efficient at
rebuilding the database :-\

Well with a new Palm, you could use this to sync to the new device, but
there is one thing I dont understand. What were you synching the Palm
address book with ??? Shouldnt you simply have the compelte address book
there?? (Entourage, System Address Book, Palm Desktop...)

It's possible that it's not your database. Try holding down the shift key
when launching Entourage. This disables schedules and will allow you to open
Entourage and eliminate the problem message.

OK, you did that and Entourage still doesn't launch....

The first thing you need to determine is where the problem is located.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
If it's your User's folder that contains the problem. Problems in the user
folder can be (1) database corruption, or (2)corrupt preferences or (3)
conflict with another application...usually a haxie.

To test if the problem is in your User's folder, create a new User is System
Preferences and test your Office applications there. First open Entourage
with a new blank Identity.

Does it work, if yes then you will need to move your problematic Main
Identity folder to the Shared folder so you can access it in the new User.
Move your Main Identity folder (your Identity is named main by default) to
the Shared folder so you can move it to the Documents --> Microsoft User
Data folder on the new User.

If it does not work, then this IS database corruption. If it does work, then
it's preferences or a conflict.

To test for Entourage preferences move to the desktop:

~/Library/Preferences/:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist
com.microsoft.DatabaseDaemon.plist
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

OK, you've done all that and it's database corruption. I know it's a lot of
work, but what if it wasn't database corruption and you could have solved
your problem.

Can you open the database? If yes, then export your data so you can create a
new Identity. See the options here for exporting:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/corrupt.html>

If you can't open then your only recourse is to revert to a backup Identity
and salvage what you can.

FWIW, the Entourage 2004 database rebuild is improved over the Entourage X
rebuild. On top of that Entourage 2004 is compliant with the daylight saving
time fix. Entourage X is not and will not be upgraded. Copies of Entourage
2004 can be found rather inexpensively now so this might be a good time to
consider upgrading.

Thanks a lot Diana,

Had a run through everything, and it's now very clear it's database
corruption. BTW, forgot to tell you Entourage itself displayed once an alert
message after first rebuild concerning the 4Gigs reached very limit of
database.

Problem is, my name is stupid. No backups. Ouch !

Might try the Entourage 2004 option, as it seems a possible remaining option
for now.

You're right, this had to be done. But it didn't work, even after complete
rebuild with updated version.

I was synching with Entourage. That's a reason for not having any backup, I
had this Palm, it WAS my backup. Anyway, I have no Adress Book as long as it
was in my Entourage's main identity, which is unavailable as you know. And
synching with Entourage means... well... synching with Entourage, not with
other softwares like System Adress Book or Palm Desktop, which doesn't
manage to open "Entourage Storage" file.

Would you know what could be the "procédure" to follow in order to recover
my adress book with a new Palm ?

Ask again with a new subject. Someone from Palm monitors this list at times.
