creating a vlookup based on another vlookup

Okay, this is today's VLOOKUP problem:

I have done a VLOOKUP to another worksheet that has told me that th
information is on that worksheet. I now need to take the response fro
that cell ("on xref" or "not on xref") and do a search on the "on xref
to tell me whether the person is active or terminated.

"on xref" is true, "not on xref" is false.

How do I write this? The original lookup was written:

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(B2,'[Cross Reference through 11150
payroll.xls]Cross-reference'!$B$2:$B$15201,1,FALSE)),"Not on XREF","O
XREF")

with B2 being the original piece of data the VLOOKUP was searching fo
and B3 is where the function is. B4 is where the new VLOOKUP will be
If B3 says "on xref", then the new VLOOKUP will search the appropriat
column in the master data sheet to return a response of active o
terminated for the particular piece of data.

I cannot send the spreadsheets, so please do not ask.

Thanks,

Stace
