Creating and decorating a learning curve graph

I'm trying to graph a learning curve. I'm using the normal cum distribution,
a smooth curve rising gradually, then rising steeply, then leveling off. I
want to break the area below this line into 4 sections, from left to right,
then color and label each section ("emerging", "novice", "advanced",
"sustaining". Anybody got a clue how to do this?

I hope this is not too complex.

1) Use the line tool to create the X and Y axis as seperate lines. Use the
shift key to make sure the lines are horizontal and vertical.

2) Use the oval tool to create a tiny circle to represent each of the points
you want your curve to pass through. Again use the shift key to make the
oval a perfect circle. Make sure the circle is very small.

3) Use the Ctrl key to duplicate the tiny cirlces on the path you want your
curve to pass through. Adjust the positions to get it looking right. I used
about 7 circles to get the curve I experiemented on.

4) Use the curve line tool to create the curve by clicking on each tiny
circle.

5) Select the curve, right click and select 'edit points'.

6) Place the mouse on each point and convert the point to a smooth point so
it has adjustment horns.

7) Adjust each point's horns until the curve meets your requirements - You
may need to move the point up or down rather than adjust the horns. Also try
zooming in with Ctrl and the roller on your mouse to get a close up of the
point and make finer adjustments.

8) Delete the tiny circles.

9) Select the freeform line tool and draw each segment. Use the Alt key to
give you fine adjustments on placing points and the shift key to give you
verticle and horizontal lines. (remember to double click on the last point
to make sure the end points join to form a solid figure)

10) Some tips:
a) You may need to use several points to trace the curve part of the
freeform shape
b) Start on the end of the previous freeform shape to make sure the
next shape algins perfectly with it.
c) Turn on edit points of the freeform shape to change the type of
point i.e. the first and last points of the curve part should be 'corner
points'.

11) Color each shape.

12) Use animation to show each freeform shape in sequence i.e. on your mouse
click.

I can send you my trial example if you like!

Yes, please! If you have an example that would be helpful. I understand
each of the steps you outlined, that's a beginning. Thank you so much for
the simple and clear instructions!
