Custom view with dates?

I am trying to create a custom view that includes mail messages with a
specific text in the subject, but only those that have been sent or
received since a certain date, say the beginning of the year. The
"date sent" or "date received" entries from the drop-down menu of a
criterion are associated with a "days old" input only, not specific
dates. This means that if, for example, I enter "is less than" 40 days
old, I will keep having to change that number all the time, so that
all the messages since the beginning of the year stay in the view.
Is there any way around this?

Do you realize you are trying to do two different things with one custom
view? You could create a companion view for the mail that drops out of the
date range by assigning a category to the original view. Create a view "This
year" for that category so you can view the older mail.
