Dash deletes previous word

I often start e-mail messages with "Hi, John-" ending with a dash,
not a comma. However, in Entourage, when I hit Return after this, the
name is deleted, so I have just "Hi, -" at the top. I'm not sure
what's happening; is there some way I can disable this?

It is in '01, not '04. And yes, I've got it set to replace 2 ens with
an em. I wouldn't mind it not changing them in Entourage, but couldn't
live without it in Word. Guess I can cough up for '04, but it's really
a nuisance (considering I've just switched to Entourage on a new
machine and like it a lot). Thanks.

Okay, yeah, that was the same as I had. I learned to use a comma, drove me
crazy for a while.

If you have a separate entry to replace 2 hyphens with an em dash, you could
maybe delete that from the AutoCorrect entries and in Word, go to Tools |
AutoCorrect, AutoFormat As You Type, and check "replace symbol characters
with symbols". That will create most of the necessary em dashes in Word.

Or you could turn off AutoCorrect in Entourage entirely, Tools |
AutoCorrect, uncheck "replace text as you type".

Ent 2004 has this weird thing where 2 hyphens converting to an em dash
followed by a number jumps the cursor back a character, but I don't run into
that one nearly as often as I ran into the 2001 em dash problem.
