data not sorting correctly

WinXP, Excel 2002

I have a public library database of about 900 records/rows showing internet
usage for a specified period of time. Some of the column headers are: Age,
Residence, Date, Type of Internet Use. I sorted the data by age...worked
slick. Saved it and closed it. Later in the day I reopened and tried a new
sort...first by residence and secondly by age. It will not work...it still
sorts by age first. I tried sorting only by date...still sorts by age. What
am I doing wrong?

Is the Residence field numeric, text, or a mix?

Every column **was** formatted as GENERAL except the date column. I just
changed the formatting to TEXT and now the sort works as it should.
