Database and identities woes

I just had to reformat my HD and backed up the Microsoft User Data
folder in the hope my Entourage indentities database would load my old
messages and settings. But it didn't. Could anyone explain why that was
and what I should do? The database and app are on an external drive

Your identity folder, including your database, needs to be located in
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office <version> Identities/
where "~" represents your home folder, which you can find by selecting
"Home" from the "Go" menu in the Finder. Move your identity folder into
that location so that Entourage can find it. Then, in Entourage, if
necessary, go to Entourage > Switch Identity and re-select your identity.

If you re-installed the Entourage application, make sure it is up-to-date.
