Database can't be opened with this version of Entourage

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

I've upgraded 2008 using SP1 and now it's all gone horribly wrong. I've seen posts relating to this issue, but I seem to have a particularly virulent breakdown.
Here's what happened.
After the update, Entourage failed to open, the error message was that the database can't be opened with this version of Entourage. In theory as I understand it this error should only occur when you try to go back to an earlier version of Entourage having already opened a later version, which doesn't apply to me as I was up to date with the latest version of Entourage. But anyway, here I am.
At the same time Word now opens but comes up with an error message "There is a problem with the Office Database..." It recommends using the Database Utility to rebuild the database, which I do, but it makes no difference - the same error comes up each time I try and open Word.
So I tried to reinstall the update. Now the updater tells me that there is no version of Office to update!
So I've reinstalled Office from the original disk, and still I get the same problem. The updater doesn't recognise the earlier version of Office.
Ideally what I'd like is some kind soul to provide me with a nice step by step guide as to what I should do now.
I'll be eternally grateful, at the moment I've lost 6 months of emails.

Move your Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop and rename it Old
Microsoft User Data folder. Let Entourage create a new MUD folder. If
Entourage opens OK, then move your Identity back into the MUD folder -->
2008 Identities folder. Does it work? You can move your scripts and other
important files back also.
