Database rebuild ate all my emails

Entourage was telling me that there was a problem with the database
and so I Verified and Rebuilt. Now all of the emails in subfolders of
the Inbox (several hunred) have vanished. There is of course the
backup database created by the Rebuild but I'm reluctant to use it
since it is likely to contain the problem that caused the Rebuild in
the first place.

Any ideas where the emails have gone and how I can retrieve them. (The
subfolders are governed by Rules which direct incoming mail directly
into specified project folders - these are all empty - the inbox
itself has survived.)

PowerBook G4; OS10.4.10

Many thanks

Forgot to mention - it's an Exchange server (might they be there?)

Did you check the folders via Outlook Web Access to see if the messages are
still located on the server? It sounds as if the messages are just no
longer cached, meaning they're still on the server. To re-download them,
just click the folder, and press Command (Apple)-L or maybe Option-Command-L
if necessary.

Thanks. Yes, they are still on the server but they are taking an age
(4 hours so far) to upload due to uncommonly slow connection speeds
at the server end for - I imagine - ISP reasons. Fingers crossed.

Thanks
