Database will not rebuild

G

Gil Anspacher

This is a strange one! It happened before and I can not remember how I got
out of it.

* Mac OS 10.3.8 Office Ver 10.1.6
* Deleted items and in box shows grey in messages list and get a 4632 if you
click on the list. Time to rebuild database
* I open entourage with option held down and I either get the Œquit other
office apps¹ message and then an unexpected quit or I get the rebuild dialog
box, but it is blank and then an unexpected quit within a few seconds.
* I have tried:
* trashing Entourage prefs
* trashing entourage app, installing new from Cd and then running 10.1.6
updater.

I can
* open entourage
* send this message

Ideas?

Thanks!
Gil

Did you quit Office Notifications before trying the rebuild? The message to
quit other Office apps include Notifications.

Error 4362 in Entourage X

The action could not be completed. An unknown error (4362) occurred.

When you try to use Microsoft Entourage X to send or to receive e-mail, you
receive this error message: Error 4362. The solution is typically resolved
by performing a typical or advanced rebuild of the database file.

Sometimes this error indicates a problem Entourage is having with the
Microsoft Database Daemon. Quit the daemon
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/daemon.html>

Then go to System preferences/Login and remove any entries of the database
daemon from the 'login items' window. Now start up Entourage again and
hopefully the problem will have been resolved.

Note: Some users reported this error when clicking on a corrupt email. 4362
is not the usual error for a corrupt message. If deleting the message does
not solve the problem, try a rebuild. If this is your problem, then try the
following:

Go to View menu/Preview Pane, or press command-\, to turn the Preview Pane
off. Now when he click on the message, you will be able to delete it. If
this is a POP account and a local folder, then go to Tools/Run
Schedule/Empty Deleted Items Items Folder. If it is an IMAP account set up
with its own Deleted Items Folder, quit Entourage so it will get purged, or
if set up to "mark for deletion" press command-K to connect to the account
to purge it.

If your database is hosed, then I suggest you export your data as soon as
possible while you can still open Entourage. Basics on exporting here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/import_export/export.html>

Paul Berkowitz has scripts that will export almost everything. Export-Import
Entourage for Entourage X and 2001 (shareware)

Diane,

Thanks for the prompt response! I have seen all of this info and:

* Office notifications and daemon are off
* It is not that often that the quit all MS apps message comes up
* Mostly, I get the rebuild dialog that is blank and then unexpected quit
* I can get the rebuild dialog all there if after an unexpected quit and
relaunch entourage very quickly. Then I see the complete rebuild dialog but
the rebuild button does not react and it unexpectedly quits.
* It does this regardless of what database is in use (even a simple 1
message dummy account
* This has happened before and I got past it somehow and did a successful
rebuild, but do not remember how.

Other ideas?

Thanks!
Gil

I found it!!

I think I have found a conflict between DragThing 5.3 and Entourage X:

When trying to rebuild an Entourage X database (hold down option key when
launching Entourage X), the rebuild dialog comes up and gives an unexpected
quit. When I quit DragThing, the rebuild database dialog comes up fine.

Mac OS 10.3.8
Entourage 10.1.6
DragThing 5.3

If a clean identity will not rebuild, try the following after you have run
"repair permissions."

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/repair_permissions.html>

1. Create a new User in System Preferences
2. Launch Entourage and create a test identity. Try to rebuild
3. If it works then it's a problem in your User's folder. Use the "remove
Office" and reinstall and update.
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/remove_office.html>
4. If it does not work, then it's problems in your OS and you would need to
do an Archive and Install of the OS.
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/archive_install.html>

Lastly, do you know if the cron jobs are run? If you shut down your computer
overnight, you need to run the cron jobs that Apple has set to run at 3AM.
There are several applications to help with this task. Macaroni and
MacJanitor both have this option. Download here:

You need to update DragThing to 5.5.1

Or update to Entourage 2004. Or just switch the "Update application
icons" popup menu to "Never" in the Advanced section of the DragThing
Preferences. This problem is well documented. m.
