Database won't open--1 GB full of data

I moved both 2004 and 2008 to the trash--didn't delete trash. I reinstalled
2004 then the 11.5 update. Then installed 2008 again and all went perfectly.
Then tried to do the 12.1.1 update and it does not allow using the Mac HD
disk where Office installed. I imported a previous archived file from lat
December but most of my data is since then. iDISK was no help.

Need to get at the email data---please help.

You need to delete trash then install!! I hate to say you need to do this
all again, but that's what it will take.

It appeared to be a good update, but obviously something went wrong. See the
Dos and Don'ts for a good install

Office needs to be in the root Application folder. Did you install in a
different location?

This is not clear. Have you been using Entourage 2008? You can import your
Entourage 2004 Identity into Entourage 2008, but you cannot import from the
same version. Normally, you just use the same Microsoft User Data folder and
the new install opens your Identity as before...I'm assuming here that you
had Entourage 2008 installed.

Office 2008 is in the root Applications folder but it has probably been moved
around a couple of times since install. Windows is actually easier to do
this kind of stuff with than MAC. Got any suggestions....

I'm trying to help but I asked questions you didn't bother to answer and I
suggested you would need to re-install. Was I not clear?

sorry, didn't see your posts in the body of the answer. Thought only
comments were at end. Will take out the 2004 and 2008 installations and
empty the trash. The Microsoft User Data should remain since it is in the
Documents folder. Will also copy the database and save it on desktop with
another name just in case. Will do sometime this AM. Thanks, Tom

removed all instances of 2004 and 2008. emptied trash. moved Microsoft User
Data to desktop. reinstalled 2004, then 11.5, then 2008. Did not try to
open, but when trying to install the 12.1.1 update it searches for a volume
to install to and the Macintosh HD icon comes up but then you get an error
message saying "YOU CANNOT INSTALL OFFICE 2008 12.1.1 UPDATE ON THIS VOLUME.
A VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE REQUIRED TO INSTALL THIS UPDATE WAS NOT FOUND ON
THIS VOLUME." It frezes at that point and the only option given to you is "go
back". The 2008 is installed in the application root directory, and there
are no other ties to any previous install anywhere on the Mac that I could
find. Everything will be left exactly at this point.

Hi Tom!

I don't see you mentioning that you first tried installing the 12.1.0
update before trying to install the 12.1.1 update. Also, be sure to
install 12.1.2 after that.

If you've already installed the 12.1.0 update then have a look at
Diane's blog post about your update problem:

"12.1.1 updater woes- a version of the software required not found"

Hope this helps!

I will go back and get that, didn't see it first pass. While on subject, is
there some reason why my MAC will not download anything from the
download.microsoft.com server--neither Safari nor Firefox will download. I
have to go to a Windows PC and then transfer file after it downloads. Will
go retrieve 12.1.0 and try again

This has become a common problem lately in the past several months and
is out of Microsoft's control.

Your ISP's DNS servers, which resolve server names to IP addresses so
that your machine can connect, have given your Mac some bad information.

First, try clearing your computer's DNS cache. It's quick and causes no
harm:

1. Open the Terminal application found in /Applications/Utilities.
2. Enter this command followed by a return:

dscacheutil -flushcache (for Leopard)
lookupd -flushcache (for Tiger)

3. Try your download again. Your machine should have to query your DNS
servers again for an address.

If the above doesn't work then your ISP's DNS servers are still causing
you a problem. Look into using <http://www.opendns.org/> to substitute
your ISP's DNS server addresses with this service's DNS servers. It's
also very simple and will very probably allow you to download your
updates. You may need to run the above Terminal command again after
changing your DNS servers.

You might also consider just using these new DNS server addresses
permanently. See if your speed accessing websites improves and note
whether or not you have fewer or more problems connecting to sites.

For more information have a look at this blog post:

got it--finally. thank you guys so much. As a suggestion going forward, it
would make your life much easier if people saw responses in a different font
or color. I missed sever because they looked like the body of my question..
thanks again. I will try the suggestion on DNS clearing.

This is a newsgroup and it can be accessed via a newsreader, a Google
interface and the Mactopia interface. It is not a forum as the Mactopia
interface seems to indicate. Because of the different servers what you see
varies widely. Your best option is to use a newsreader. Entourage has a
newsreader and it is a bare bones one, but it is very easy to use to
subscribe to the Microsoft newsgroups. Thunderbird is a good free
alternative.

There is also huge lag time (could be hours or days) on when messages are
seen depending on how you access. Mactopia seems to lag behind. Because of
this discrepancy, a lot of miscommunication occurs. We post an answer and
users keep asking and we wonder why? User being to lazy to look or the post
has not shown up yet???

The Mactopia forum strips out HTML, but newsreaders will show it if used. We
generally advise plain text over HTML as it does not impose your font
choices and sizes on other users.

Users also don't quote back thinking everyone sees the same threading as
shown on the web, but for those of us that use a newsreader, it make helping
much harder as we have to open old messages to even see what they are
talking about. Top that off with multiple hijacking....I'm seeing a similar
problem and a thread can get out of hand. I've seen threads that started
back in Jan with up to 70 posts and multiple questioners. It's a mess.

I highly suggest that you use a nospam address for posting on newsgroups.

Frankly, the only good thing about the Mactopia forum is it has made it easy
for users to find this newsgroup. IMHO
