Date capabilities

I am using excel-97
I am wishing to set up a simple spreadsheet with the following column :-

Date: Jan 3, 1870, Jan 10, 1870, Jan 17, 1870 and so on
i.e. the dates are one week apart.
I wish to enter the first date and then use a formula to generate the rest
i.e. Jan 3, 1870, +7, +7, +7 etc.

My question is: how do you enter dates pre 1/1/1900 ?
