DATE CONVERSION

spreadsheet has the following date ranges and format:

01/01/2003 through 12/31/2003
01/01/2004 through 06/31/2004

I am trying to count the amount of sales for each month by
year

For example:

Jan 2003 had 5 sales, Feb 2003 had 20 sales.

if these dates are for example in column A try
=SUMPRODUCT(--(MONTH(A1:A1000)=1),--(YEAR(A1:A1000)=2003))

or try using a pivot table for this
