De-activation (UK OEM version)

N

Nick E

Got seriously muddled up with which PC I actually needed the OEM version of
office 2003 to be running on and now decided to revert to the original PC
that it came with (brand new as of today).

How do I unactivate the product so that I can move the licence to the
desired PC. I dare not uninstall from it's current PC as I am afraid that
this may leave m high and dry with no PC running Office.

What help I have been able to find on the MS site simply states that is you
make a serious hardware change then you may have to reactivate the product.
It does not expand on the proceedure and offers no help on solving my
predicament.

Alternativly can anyone give me the UK activation telephone number?

By installing it on a second machine (i.e. other than that with which it was
sold) you are in violation of the OEM EULA and I'm very surprised it
activated. The OEM licence is forever tied to the machine with which it was
sold (in the case of a software that was sold with a system) or the first
system it was installed on (in the case of a licence sold with an item of
hardware). Once installed, it cannot be removed and reinstalled on any other
system.

For future benefit of those experiencing a similar problemhere is how
the problem was resolved.

I called the UK activation number (which I regret to say I have now
lost). They simply asked me to uninstall from the incorrect PC ie not
the one that the OEM version came with, which I duly did, then took
my through the activation process on the correct PC. No hastle and all
resolved within a short time. Well done MS.

In the short space of time that I looked at Office 2003 I can only
assume that SP1 can't be far away as I already irreparably broke the
Outlook Newsgroup facility and notice from the appropriate newsgroup
that I am not alone.

Sorry this is getting a bit off topic and probably belongs in the
Outlook->Setup newsgroup. But to answer Milly's question:

First off I followed the help file instructions to place News in the
Go menu and all worked fine.

Next time I came to use it however the News menu item it was no longer
firing up the news reader but instead behaving like a shortcut to one
of the folders on my HD. This was bizarre as all I had done was shut
the correctly working news reader then immediately tried to restart
it. Nothing more or less.

No problem I thought, just drag the non working news menu item back
into the customise box from where it came and try again.

Problem was when I tried to reintroduce the News item as per the help
file instructions it didn't exist in any of the customise menu items
let alone the Go menu. Couldn't find the damn thing anywhere.

I tried repairing the Office 2003 install without resolving the
problem. Gave up in the end and went back to Forte's Agent. Note that
my first message in this thread came from Outlook 2003, the rest from
Agent. Academic in the end as I no longer use Office 2003 but have
reverted back to my (correctly licensed) older Office.

Why can't the Outlook news reader be activated by default (or are we
into monopoly issues here)?

It is a problem I have seen in the Outlook groups - if you right click on
the toolbar, select the Advanced toolbar and then click on "reset toolbar"
it will normally return. Or is it the Standard toolbar? I forget as I have
not had the problem myself.

Once you have clicked on the reset option, you can then add the news icon to
the toolbar again. It also works for other news readers besides OE. If you
have made Agent your default, it should work for Agent as well.

If none of the above works, then close Outlook, find and rename outcmd.dat
to .old and reopen Outlook. You will have to redo your custom buttons as
the file controls how toolbars display. (If using Windows 2000 or XP, you
will need to add hidden and system files to the windows search criteria.)
