Default Columns (Can't change them)

P

Paul Dersley

I have recently bought a Mac and the Mac version of office - why no Outlook?
Entorage seems a pale comparison (especially as the cost is of the software,
in UK at least, is the same as Windows version)

Why no received/read receipts as well

I Can't seem to get Entorage to remember my column settings for IMAP "Sent
Items" folder. Whenever I log on again it always shows the "From" Column
which is rather stupid as, by definition, I know who they're from.

Any Advice.

There used to be a version of Outlook for Mac (and it was free) for the
old OS, but it only worked with an Exchange Server. No POP. The old
Office only came with Word, Powerpoint, and Excel (along with IE and
OE, really not worth mentioning), so the addition of Entourage makes us
feel even better about the amount of money we pay for Office. With the
advent of Office for OSX, Enturage replaced the major funtionalities of
of Outlook. MS has said that Entourage will replace the Exchange
development of Outlook. I can only assume how far they will take this
functionality in upcoming versions of Entourage, so I won't speculate
;-)

For a FAQ on Entourage and Exchange, see the following link:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/exchange/faqs.html>

When one changes platforms, all application and required functionality
considerations should be fully investigated before sinking all that
money.
Why no received/read receipts as well

There are plenty of arguements for both the pros and cons of the
necessity of return receipts in these MS newsgroups. The bottom line is
that it doesn't come with it, but it can be implemented with some
rules. To get return receipt functionality in Entourage, see my page:

I'm not real sure what you are looking for here. Your view is a
constant view throughout Entourage. Because you happen to be looking in
your sent folder is of no consequence to Entourage I would think. You
could add a column of "To" but that would give you the same problem,
only in your received items folder. If you are searching for a
particular person that you sent an email to, you could always use the
search function in the upper right hand corner, only have the
parameters say "To" "Contains" and type in whoever it is you are
looking for.

No, no. First of all, Paul doesn't say whether he's using Preview Pane
below, No Preview Pane, or the new three-column Preview Pane at Right View.

(_That_ view will be consistent per IMAP server, news server, or for all
local folders, but has to be set once for each of these.) If Preview Pane
below, or No Preview Pane, where many columns are on view. the simplest
thing is to include both To and From columns, but it's not necessary - you
can set each folder differently. Removing From and adding To for a Sent
Items folder - or any folder - should stick. If by any chance Entourage
crashes on quit, the the setting will not be retained.

For the new three-column Preview Pane at Right, you see only Subject, From
and some of the flags. This can't be set. However, for "official" Sent Items
folders, you should be seeing "To" instead of From. That applies both to the
built-in local Sent Items folder "On My Computer", and to IMAP Sent Items
folders that you have specified in Accounts/[that account]/Edit/Advanced.
But it will _not_ apply to any other folder, no matter what you call it.
It's possible that your IMAP server has its own designated Sent folder with
a similar name. But if you haven't specified it by "Store sent messages in
this IMAP folder" in Advanced pane of Accounts, it won't work that way.

I'd recommend selecting the IMAP server icon in the Folder list and perusing
its own folders list at the right (main window). Is there more than on Sent
folder? Are you subscribed to a different one tan the designated one in
Accounts?

The designated Sent Items IMAP folder should be displaying the To
recipients.

Walt, thank you for your brilliant workaround -- not only the idea, which
demonstrates your consummate skill with Entourage, but the absolutely clear
instructions. Terrific!

And thank you for sharing it with us :)
